I feel that blogs could be used in many ways in education. Students can use blogs to learn about the world around them and what their future entails. Blogs can help students to communicate their opinions as well as learning the opinions of their peers, educators, and other people around the world.
I think that blogs can be a way of research for many students. This is a way for students to be up to date with the 21st Century Themes such as politics, current events, health issues and information and so much more. Students would be able to communicate with their family, friends, and many other people via blogs to continue their learning. I think that collaborating with not only their peers, but other students around the world and with adults about issues that are current will keep them informed about many different issues.
Blogs also keep our students up to date on the technology that is out there for their use and keeps information at their finger tips.
Teachers could use blogs to have students comment on the reading they are assigned, ask questions about issues they don't understand, and explain the things they are learning.

Great blog. It is a great concept to have our students blogging with other students and adults outside the school building. We need to protect our students from internet predators. Because of this my school blocks just about every site. Would your school allow blogging on sites from outside of the school building?
ReplyDeleteOne way of doing this is by starting with a more contrained blog (edublogger, Class Blogmeister, 21classes) and selectively inviting in individuals to participate. Perhaps you could connect with another class rather than the whole world.
ReplyDeleteYou and I seem to think a lot alike in how we can see blogs being used. I too think that students can use blogs as research but I believe we also need to talk with them about reliable sources. A blog can be reliable as long as it is mentioned in the fact that it could be more opinionated however they could be used to discuss point of view. Understanding personal circumstances and point of view I believe would be easier to teach students if they can actually ask the person who submitted the statement instead of having to assume how a character in a book might feel.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of students asking questions via a blog. Not only do they have the chance to get their question answered, but then other students can come in, view the comment threads, and see an answer before they ask they same question. It's helpful for the teacher and the class.
ReplyDeleteThis may not have been what Sarah meant, but how about using a blog about a book with the postings coming from actual characters in the book and the students asking questions. You could have different students responsible for taking the roles of different characters. It might be an interesting way for them to research the characters in depth, develop empathy and learn the concept of "voice".
